Fluoride is a nutrient that helps to reduce the occurrence of tooth decay and decreases tooth sensitivity. If an adequate amount of fluoride is available internally during childhood when teeth are being formed, it is absorbed throughout the enamel of the teeth making them resistant to decay. But once teeth have formed, internal availability of fluoride does not have much effect on the strength of teeth. That is why fluoridated toothpastes are recommended. Sealants help in preventing tooth decay by preventing cavities. A sealant is a plastic resin material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant works by bonding to the grooves of the teeth and acting as a barrier, protecting the enamel. Brushing and flossing can remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth but can not reach into deep grooves. Sealants protect these hard to reach areas and therefore prevent decay.
