Periodontics

Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the treatment of conditions affecting the gums and bones supporting your teeth. Gingivitis, the initial stage of gum disease, is hard to detect but is reversible. However, untreated gingivitis may lead to the advanced stage of gum disease called periodontitis.

Periodontitis, which mat involve the breaking down of gum and bone tissue, is irreversible, and could eventually lead to tooth loss. It has been linked to serious, and sometimes life threatening, health conditions like increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, or higher blood sugar levels that could be dangerous for diabetic patients. Some research suggests that advanced gum disease can even lead to premature birth and low birth weight. According to one study up to 18% of premature and low birth weight babies may be born to mothers with such conditions. It has also been linked to a higher instance of lung infections caused by bacteria from the mouth reaching the lungs.

At Dr. Happy Smiles, our periodontists specialize in diagnosing, preventing and treating gum disease. A proper periodontal evaluation is the only way to detect gum disease, and prevent the numerous health conditions that it could lead to if left untreated.

We have various treatments available depending on the specific condition. One of the treatments is scaling, which involves deep cleaning and the removal of plaque and calculus, while sometimes a medication is used to kill the bacteria in your mouth. However, when the periodontal disease has advanced severely, surgery may be required to stop or minimize its progression. Surgery is also used to replace bone that may have been lost in advanced stages of the disease.

If you have been suffering from swollen or bleeding gums, you should consult with one of our experienced dentists to determine if you have periodontal disease. If not taken care of, the infection could spread and lead to serious health issues.
