If your teeth have developed improperly, you may need orthodontics. Crooked teeth not only affect your appearance, but also damage your dental health. Irregularities of the teeth make it difficult for you to maintain proper hygiene, increasing the risk of tooth decay and of periodontal disease.
At Dr. Happy Smiles, we have specialized dentists and orthodontists who can determine if you need treatment. Before we recommend orthodontics and develop an individualized plan for you, we go through your medical and dental history, conduct a clinical exam, and take plaster models, X-rays and photographs of your teeth.
Orthodontic treatments are prescribed for a variety of irregularities, but here are a few common ones. Overbite is a condition where the upper front teeth are positioned too far ahead of the lower front teeth. Underbite is when the lower front teeth are too far ahead of the upper front teeth. A crossbite is when the upper teeth do not come slightly in front of the lower teeth when biting, as they should. An open bite is when there is space between the biting surfaces of front or side teeth when you bite your back teeth together. Then there is the misplaced midline, which is the center of your upper front teeth not lining up with the center of your lower front teeth. Spacing refers to the gaps or spaces between teeth, while crowding is when there are too many teeth for the dental ridge to accommodate.
To fix problems like these, we offer the traditional dental braces, a tried and tested treatment you are probably familiar with. Our dentists are also trained use Invisalign teeth aligners, which are clear and removable, an excellent alternative to braces.
